This guide provides step-by-step instructions to safely remove and replace the battery in your Dell 16 DC16251 (Models: P131F, P131F001). Follow all safety precautions and procedures carefully.
Quick Install Steps (Technician Checklist)
- Shut down the system, unplug AC power, and enter Service Mode.
If Service Mode is unavailable or the system will not power on, disconnect the battery cable before any other steps. - Remove six screws (M2x5) and loosen two captive screws on the base cover.
- Pry from the U-shaped recesses near the hinges and remove the base cover.
- Open the latch and disconnect the battery cable from the system board (BATT).
- Remove five screws (M2x3.5), then lift out the battery with its cable.
- Install the new battery: seat tabs into hooks, align holes, secure five M2x3.5 screws, reconnect the cable (BATT).
- Reinstall the base cover: snap in, tighten two captive screws, and replace the six screws (M2x5).
- Fully charge the new battery before first use; adjust charge settings in the MyDell app (Power).

Removing the Base Cover
Prerequisites: Follow the procedure in “Before working inside your computer.” Ensure the system is in Service Mode. If the computer does not turn on, does not enter Service Mode, or does not support Service Mode, proceed to disconnect the battery cable.
- Remove the six screws (M2x5) and loosen the two captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.

- Note: Upon loosening the captive screws, a small gap opens between the base cover and the palm-rest at the hinges.
- Using a plastic scribe, pry open the base cover starting at the U-shaped indents along the top edge near the hinges.
- Pry along the top, then continue along the left, right, and bottom edges to release the clips and open the base cover.

- Lift and remove the base cover from the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Removing the Battery
Prerequisites: Follow “Before working inside your computer” and remove the base cover.
- Open the latch and disconnect the battery cable from the connector (BATT) on the system board.
- Remove the five screws (M2x3.5) that secure the battery to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
- Lift the battery, along with the battery cable, off the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.

Installing the Battery
Prerequisites: If you are replacing a component, remove the existing component before performing the installation procedure.
- Place the battery, along with the battery cable, in the slot on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
- Note: When placing the battery, insert the tabs on the battery into the hooks on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.

- Align the screw holes on the battery with the screw holes on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
- Replace the five screws (M2x3.5) to secure the battery.
- Connect the battery cable to the connector (BATT) on the system board.

Note: Battery and battery cable are separate serviceable parts. If replacing the battery, reuse the same battery cable when possible. See “Connecting the battery cable” for additional detail.
Installing the Base Cover
- Place the base cover on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
- Align the screw holes and snap the cover into place.

- Tighten the two captive screws and replace the six screws (M2x5) to secure the base cover.

After Reassembly
- Connect AC power and power on the system. If prompted, confirm the battery has been replaced in BIOS.
- Charge the battery fully before first use. Configure charging behavior in the MyDell application (Power).
- Dispose of old batteries responsibly per local regulations.
