Tools & Preparation
- Small Phillips screwdriver
- Plastic pry tool (spudger)
- Anti-static precautions (wrist strap or touch earthed metal before handling parts)
Time: ~15–25 minutes | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
Important Notices
- Before working inside your computer: Shut down Windows, disconnect the AC adaptor, and unplug all accessories.
- Service Mode: Ensure the laptop is in Service Mode (as per Dell’s instructions). If you cannot enter Service Mode or your model does not support it, disconnect the battery cable once the base cover is off, then press and hold the power button for five seconds to drain flea power.
- SIM/microSD: Remove the SIM-card tray (if fitted), and ensure there is no microSD card installed.
- BIOS note: Removing the battery resets BIOS setup settings to default. It’s wise to note your BIOS settings beforehand.
Removing the Base Cover
Prerequisites: Follow “Before working inside your computer”. Confirm Service Mode is active where applicable.
- Loosen the eight captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest assembly.
- Using a plastic scribe, pry open the base cover from the recesses located in the U-shaped indents at the top edge of the base cover (near the hinges).
- Lift the base cover off the palm-rest assembly.

Cannot enter Service Mode? Peel off the tape (if present) and disconnect the battery cable from the BATT1 connector on the system board, then press and hold the power button for five seconds to ground the system and drain flea power.

Removing the Battery
Prerequisites: Follow “Before working inside your computer”, remove the SIM-card tray (optional), and remove the base cover.
CAUTION: Removing the battery resets BIOS settings to factory defaults. Record any custom BIOS settings in advance.
- Disconnect the battery cable from the BATT1 connector on the system board (if not already disconnected).
- Loosen the four captive screws that secure the battery to the palm-rest assembly.
- Lift the battery off the palm-rest assembly.
- If replacing the battery, transfer the battery cable from the old battery to the replacement pack (refer to “Removing the battery cable” in Dell’s service content if needed).

Installing the Battery
Prerequisite: If you are replacing a component, remove the existing part first.
- If the battery cable was removed, fit the cable to the new battery first.
- Using the alignment posts, position the battery on the palm-rest assembly.
- Align the screw holes and tighten the four captive screws to secure the battery. Do not overtighten.

Installing the Base Cover
Prerequisite: Remove any old parts before installing replacements.
- Connect the battery cable to the BATT1 connector on the system board.

- Adhere the tape on the battery cable to the battery (if present).
- Align the screw holes on the base cover with those on the palm-rest assembly, then snap the cover into place.
- Tighten the eight captive screws that secure the base cover.

Note: If the battery was not a prerequisite but you disconnected its cable earlier, ensure it is reconnected before closing up.
After You Finish
- Reinstall the SIM-card tray (if removed).
- Reconnect the AC adaptor and power on. Acknowledge any BIOS message about a battery change.
- Optional calibration: Charge to 100% and keep plugged in for ~30 minutes, then use on battery down to ~10–15% and recharge to full once. This helps the battery meter learn the new pack.
- Re-enter any custom BIOS settings you noted earlier.
Safety & Disposal (UK)
- Do not bend, puncture, or apply pressure to lithium-ion batteries. If swollen or damaged, do not use.
- Recycle batteries responsibly under the WEEE regulations. Use your local council’s battery recycling points or a retailer take-back scheme (do not dispose of in household waste).
